During a recent renovation of Montclair State University’s student services center, Susan A. Cole Hall, HMR Architects faced the challenge of bringing the century-old building’s areas of egress up to code while preserving its historic beauty. To accomplish both tasks, the design team incorporated slender fire-rated framing systems and sleek, full-lite fire-rated glass doors from Technical Glass Products (TGP). With narrow profiles and custom, H-shaped aluminum cover caps, TGP’s Fireframes® Aluminum Series frames with Pilkington Pyrostop® fire-rated glass complement the newly renovated space and its open environment. Without compromising fire and life safety, the precision engineered fire-rated framing system and clear fire-rated glass work together to maximize visual connectivity and maintain clean sightlines. This is showcased in one of the building’s prominent stairwell surrounds, where crisp corner conditions add elegance and preserve visibility. In select applications, Fireframes® Designer Series frames with arched top elevations push code-driven design further by preserving the building’s contextual significance. To create a visually unified look throughout the interior, TGP’s Fireframes Designer Series double doors are integrated within both of TGP’s framing systems.
