Case Study: Steel Curtain Wall System is a Landmark for Justice in Butte County

In Chico, California, a new 67,433 square-foot courthouse rises out of the ground like the picturesque buttes in the area's surrounding foothills. Its soaring steel and glass curtain wall entry pays tribute to the beautiful rock formations, piercing through the building's roofline to form a cupola that stands out in the skyline.

Discover how TSK Architects worked with Technical Glass Products (TGP) to design a curtain wall and cupola that was adaptable enough to follow the butte’s tall, geometrical shape, yet also strong enough to support large free spans of glazing to flood the entry with daylight.

Johnson & Wales University CenterFulton Center Transit Hub Relies on Matched Fire-Rated and Non-Fire-Rated Curtain Wall Systems from TGP for a Light-Flooded Space

When New York City was planning one of the first subways in the U.S. in the 1800s, a very real challenge was convincing people that going underground would be safe and pleasant. If those subterranean-fearing Victorian era Gothamites could see Manhattan's Fulton Center transit hub opened in late 2014, they would be amazed at the light-filled, wide open space. In describing the Fulton Center, commuter Dave Palmieri told the New York Daily News, “The light pouring in is just incredible. It's a real modern gem. Spatially, it's like Grand Central."

Water and Fire: Fire-Rated Glazing in the Niles North High School Aquatics Center

Ancient philosophers theorized four elements comprised the universe: earth, air, water and fire. The latter two of these figure prominently in the design of the Niles North High School Aquatics Center in Skokie, Illinois.

On behalf of its client, the Niles Township High School District 219, Legat Architects (Chicago) designed an "expansion and renovation of the aquatics center to improve competitive and educational swimming programs, promote community participation and enhance safety." See how the design team used fire-rated glazing to help accomplish those goals.

Jeff Razwick’s Blog on Glass Magazine: Is Glass in a Crisis?

In recent years, there’s been a hot debate about whether architecture is in a crisis. From media claiming buildings are irrelevant to Frank Gehry famously stating that with today’s buildings, "There's no sense of design, no respect for humanity or for anything else." So, is architecture, and the glass in it, really in a crisis?

As Jeff Razwick argues, glass isn’t in a crisis, but rather in an age of advancement. Today’s architecture is fueled by glass more than at any other time in history. That puts us in a prime position to use glazing to push the envelope and help create buildings that meet the needs of our communities.
