New Wired Glass Offers Fire Protection and Impact Safety
|
For decades, traditional wired glass has been a standard choice for fire-rated openings in schools and commercial facilities. Although a strong performer in fire situations, traditional wired glass does not resist impact well. When broken, the wires in the glass form snags that have resulted in a significant number of injuries.
Because of mounting concern over such injuries, the International Code Council (ICC) recently changed the International Building Code (IBC), requiring all glass in "hazardous" locations (such as doors and sidelites) to satisfy Consumer Product Safety Commission impact safety requirements. That change means traditional wired glass will no longer be an acceptable option in schools, athletic facilities, daycare centers, or other settings where it would be exposed to frequent human contact.

Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus - a new breed of wired glass that offers impact safety in addition to fire protection.
